5 tips on making an animation graduation film

A couple of days ago there was an animation meeting in our school, where the final term’s student had to share their thoughts about the graduation production for the first year students. I was actually in Poland, so I missed that, but I started to think about what would be my tips. So here are some quick thoughts, they might sound simple and obvious, but they helped me a lot ;)

1. It is your choice whether you make your graduation term fun or hell.

You decide at the beginning.

2. Never forget it is just a(nother) film

many people stress themselves from the beginning as if their life would depending on the graduation film. Well, it is surely one of the opportunity where you can make your debut, and as for every project you have to respect it. But your life is not your film.  The best if you can keep a good balance, be completely inside, but be able to look on it as the if you d see it for the frst time.

3. Respect your energy

Probably most of the students work on the film during a one year period, you have to be honest with yourself, your body, your brain, your energy. Especially when you are thinking about the schedule of your production. In almost all of the cases people tend to believe they can make things pretty quickly and straight forward. Averagely – it turns out-  it is usually the double of the time it is actually needed.  Don t forget to leave blank time, for breaks, other jobs, regeneration or for possible delays. (the same apply for your people in the team eg. respect you team ;)

4. Make your decisions

This sounds very stereotypic, but actually helped me a lot. It was Jimmy Murakami who told me: ‘when you are making a decisions in your film there is always a right way, a bad way and there is also your way. And this is what you should choose. ‘ Also it is your input what s going to make the film individual and different from the others.

5. Keep the motivation

It is hard to motivate yourself alone, so the best if you have one or two people, preferably from the production team, who understands and likes the film, so you can talk with them, and remember what are the things people like and appreciate in your film.

good luck!

‘Fun facts’

Did you know:

in contrary of My Turn, where the concept was made initially for the live visuals, Feelings gone was pitched to Basement Jaxx for the video promo, and the shoes were just a part of it. Later they choosed another project to make it to a video, but they liked the idea of having the giant shoes as a visual. What can we learn  from that? You can never know where your idea will end up? or something like that

Life Line now available to watch online

Wish you ‘happy’ november with my old graduation film.

It was first presented at the graduation show in 2006 in Budapest, then staying in the drawer for almost a year. In 2007 – thanks to a friendly deal with Woodwork music – a renovated version went out to the festival circuit, and the film tour started in Stuttgart ITFS, gaining immediately a special mention. The film was on for almost two entire years, getting more than 20 prizes and special mentions throughout the european festivals, including a Cartoon d’or nomination in 2007 and Golden Dove in Leipzig (2007). Then for a long time disappeared because of the uncleared music rights. Now is back thanks to a new agreement, and you can enjoy it online. Thanks again for everyone who helped this film, including my sounddesigner – Marton Nemeth aka El Marcee, the school: MOME , the artist behind the music Murcof and his label who let us use his creation with the film.

Just so you know, back in 2005/2006 I was working on SD so there is no HD version…

PS the new ‘creation’ will be premiered in London BFI 26.02.2010 during the NFTS graduation show

Basement Jaxx feat Lightseed Champion: My Turn video

The premiere was on stereogum
this is the link to the official youtube video
the video on my vimeo
and now enjoy it from my youtube account in HD:

It was a heavy week of working to transform the idea from a live visual to a video promo. Lightspeed Champion had to be included, so needed to find a way to work together the animation and the live action part. The process included people like: Toby Jackman on character animation, Annika Summerson cinematography and Bence Varga as SFX.

Basement Jaxx: Feeling’s gone live visuals

The long waited new visual (made in august) is now here to watch. (or on a concert)

as a result of a few weeks of researching, shopping and walking. Again I could write long hours about the concept, but who cares, it s a visual for a gig! This time Elena Pomares was helping me with animation.
I must say although I am not a fashion designer, but had quite a fun coming up with ideas for eclectic animation shoes…
